What the code means: the TCM commanded clutch A (odd gears — 1, 3, 5, reverse) to release, but the position sensor says it stayed engaged. The module isn't lying to you; something mechanical didn't move when told to. Nine times out of ten on a high-mileage DPS6, that "something" is the clutch release fork binding on a dry pivot.

What you'll feel: shudder pulling away from a stop, worse when the transmission is hot, sometimes a lurch on the 1–2 shift. Often paired with P2873 (clutch B) if both pivots are dry.

Before you start: park on level ground, wheels chocked, key out. If the vehicle went to limp mode, codes must be read before disconnecting anything — clearing them early erases the freeze-frame data you need in Step 1.

Pinpoint test

STEP 01 / 06 Read codes and freeze frame

Connect the scan tool, record all stored and pending codes, and capture the freeze-frame data for P2872 — especially transmission temperature at the time the code set.

EXPECTED: P2872 stored · freeze-frame trans temp typically > 90 °C if heat-related binding
If P2872 only → Continue to Step 02.
If U0101 also present → Diagnose TCM communication first — see the U0101 article.
STEP 02 / 06 Watch clutch A position live

With the engine off, ignition on, pull up the clutch A position PID. Have a helper cycle the ignition while you watch the actuator self-test sweep the clutch.

EXPECTED: smooth sweep, full commanded range · NO plateaus or step-jumps in the trace
Smooth sweep → Intermittent bind. Continue to Step 03 anyway — dry pivots bind hot, test cold passes are common.
Sticks or jumps → Mechanical bind confirmed. Continue to Step 03.
STEP 03 / 06 Remove the inspection cover

Locate the lower bell-housing inspection cover. Remove the T50 fasteners and set the cover aside. You now have sight of the clutch A release fork and its pivot ball.

LOOK FOR: rust bloom or dry gray witness marks at the pivot · black dust = normal clutch wear, orange = dry pivot
Pivot clean & greased → Fork is fine. Skip to Step 06 — clutch pack or actuator is the suspect.
Dry / rusty pivot → Found it. Continue to Step 04.
STEP 04 / 06 Check fork free play by hand

With the key out, push the fork through its travel by hand. It should move smoothly with light, even resistance and return without hanging up.

EXPECTED: smooth travel, no gritty feel, no hang at either end of stroke
Smooth → Marginal bind — still lube it while you're in there. Continue to Step 05.
Gritty / hangs → Confirmed sticking fork. Continue to Step 05.
STEP 05 / 06 Lubricate the pivot and contact pads

Fit the straw to the can and apply DPS6 High-Temp Fork Lube directly at the pivot ball socket and both bearing contact pads. Work the fork through its travel five to six times to draw the penetrant into the joint, then apply a second pass. Keep overspray off the clutch friction surfaces.

APPLY: 2 passes per pivot · work fork between passes · wipe excess from cover flange
Fork now smooth → Reinstall cover (8 Nm), continue to Step 06.
Still binding → Pivot or fork is worn past saving — replace the fork assembly, then continue to Step 06.
STEP 06 / 06 Clear codes and verify

Clear the DTCs, then drive: five gentle stop-and-go launches, a hill start, and one full heat cycle. Rescan.

EXPECTED: no P2872 reset after full heat cycle · shudder gone or clearly reduced
Code stays gone → Done. Recheck at your next oil change.
Code returns → Clutch pack contamination or actuator fault — the fork wasn't the root cause. See the P07A3 article.

The remedy

A dry fork pivot is a cheap fix on a repair everyone else quotes as a transmission job. The DPS6 Service Kit has the whole job in one box — high-temp fork lube, the shift fork unlocking tool, and the E8 socket for actuator removal. Master Technician support available if you get stuck.
